Symbol Sight
Descriptive Climbing Hold System for the Visually Impaired
The Problem …
Visually impaired rock climbers rely on a guide to tell them information about the route while they are climbing it.
The Solution …
The Symbol Sight allows visually impaired rock climbers to climb independently, using their tactile senses to read the wall from raised symbols that indicated the hold type and directionality of the next move.
During my sophomore year at design school, I participated in a human-centered design studio focused on adaptability for differently abled students and athletes. With a passion for rock climbing, I was particularly moved to create a solution for visually impaired climbers. Traditional methods involved verbal guidance via headsets from sighted individuals, limiting climbers' independence. Inspired to enhance their experience, I collaborated closely with blind climbers to develop Symbol Sight.
Symbol Sight revolutionizes climbing for the visually impaired with a modular, magnetic system integrated into climbing holds. Each magnetic piece, placed in the bolt hole of holds, features a tactile symbol indicating the type and direction of the next hold. This innovative approach not only promotes independence but also easily facilitates route changes, enhancing the climbing experience for all participants.
Guided by feedback from visually impaired climbers, I designed a unique symbol system that simplifies navigation and ensures inclusivity in climbing environments. Symbol Sight represents my commitment to inclusive design and empowering individuals to pursue their passions without limitations.
